Awaji Sea Scene
p1- A View of the Sea from the Awaji Coast, 2007 - pastel on paper - 40 x 28 cms(15.5 x 11 inches )

Introduction to

The Awaji Gallery Web Site

The Name of the Gallery

The name 'Awaji' is the name of the island where I live. Click here for map of Japan

Awaji is a large island south of the city of Kobe in Japan. It is connected to the mainland by a suspension bridge with the longest main span in the world at 1,991 metres(6,529 feet).

Awaji is famous for 'bunraku'(a special kind of Japanese puppet) and onions which are prized for their flavour, in addition to the many ponds which dot the countryside and the panoramic sea views, with Osaka Bay to the east, The Seto Inland Sea to the west and The Pacific Ocean to the south.

My studio is located in the south of the island, near the sea. Click here for map of Awaji

Pictures

The pictures on this website are mainly soft pastels, with some charcoal and pen & ink; a few are a mixture of all three.
There are only a few oil paintings.

There are 37 pictures in all: 18 pastel lanscapes & seascapes(#1 to #16 plus #1a & 1b), 14 abstract & semi-abstract pastels(#a1 to #a14) and 5 oil paintings(#o1 to #o5).
Pictures #1a & 1b are shown both with and without frames on the same page; they are the only framed pictures on this site.  They are  part of a series I am working on, which I have not yet finished.

Definitions
Lanscapes and seascapes are actual scenes of real places. Abstracts are products of the imagination and semi-abstracts have some resemblance to reality but they are also mainly products of the imagination.

Picture Dimensions:    Dimensions are given in centimetres and inches.

Short Art Biography
I have written a short history of my life in art, or rather, art in my life. It spans fifty years and is therefore confined mainly to events relevant to my art life. Click here to read

Web Design

I designed this site myself with the help of
Web Design With Nvu
As you will see, the design is very simple; I am a novice designer, but using this excellent tutorial I was able to create my gallery. For more adventurous souls using this tutorial, you can design much more complex pages than you can find on this site, but I prefer to keep it simple.

Uploading
I use
Classic FTP to upload files; it's extremely easy to use, which is perfect for those who are not used to managing websites.
